  • Catalysis (/kəˈtælɪsɪs/): 1. Dissolution, destruction, ruin. 2. The causing or accelerating of a chemical change by the addition of a catalyst.

The Catalysis cycle is conceived as a series of duets, each of which is composed of identical instruments. The focus in these series lies on the unique acoustic properties of the instrument pairs, with which the cycle addresses how the processes pertaining to such inner workings can be projected to the exterior, and simultaneously generate sonic-temporal images transpiring between micro- and macro-spaces.

Being the first of the series, Catalysis (a), is composed for two guitars. In order to realize the task mentioned above, a digital wave-guide model was designed. Consisting of digital filter and delay line networks, this model displayed specific acoustic activities such as absorption, damping, compression and expansion ratios per unit-time as transfer function parameters, through which the partial decay rates that are akin to various plucking locations were studied in order to engage with sonic-temporal morphologies observed at micro- and macro spaces.

Catalysis (a) is dedicated to Brian Ferneyhough and Murat Sezen with gratitude for their friendship.
