Written for oboe and english horn, Bb and bass clarinets, bassoon, and piano, Das Phonem zwischen zwei Wörtern (c) is the concluding part of a three-part cycle, with the first part written for cornet and trombones and the second part for baroque ensemble and large orchestra. This final part is composed for the contemporary versions of the period instruments used for the baroque ensemble pertaining to the second part of the cycle.
Informed by the preceding research conducted in relation to the period instruments, this concluding part of the cycle extends the scope of this collaborative research to contemporary versions of these instruments as an effort to engage with the conditions that shape the ways in which the concept of design relates to embodiment and space. Conducted together with Peter Veale on performing oboe and english horn; Carl Rosman on performing Bb and bass clarinets; James Aylward on performing bassoon; and Alex Waite on performing piano, this final part of the cycle further engages with instrument design and its relation to body and embodied spaces, not as a means to arrange a fixed past with a fixed present, but rather to trace how coeval pasts inform contemporary and individual performance praxes.
Correspondingly, Das Phonem zwischen zwei Wörtern (c) approaches instrument design as a sonic-temporal “tracer,” making visible that which conditions what I conceptualize as the in-between of body and instrument in relation to space, while also unpacking how design is politically positioned and not only shapes the spatial properties of acoustic instruments, but also evokes learned bodily gestures, and simultaneously catalyzes embodiment-in-the-making.
